A Game of Musical Memories

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

Let’s play a game! Music is one of the most powerful triggers we have available to us. Hearing a certain song or piece of music can instantly take us back to a different time or place, and memories can be stirred that were long forgotten. It can change our mood, and have a great impact on how we live our lives. Recent studies show that it can even change the way foods taste (check out this very cool video experiment with Marcus Wareing)! You can learn a great deal about someone from their music tastes, and the songs and pieces that trigger their most special memories. I propose that we flood the internet with musical nostalgia, and share those moments that mean the most to us. Can you name a song/piece of music that…

Reminds you of your childhood?

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Diana Ross! This song always makes me think of my Mum, as she used to quote the lyrics to me when I was growing up: ‘If you need me call me, no matter where you are, no matter how far.’

Reminds you of being 13?

Yeah – Usher. This song was absolutely huge when I was 13. All the girls (and some of the boys) were in love with Usher that summer. I remember going on a school trip to Wales, and everyone was listening to his Confessions album on their CD walkmans!

Reminds you of being 18?

Ain’t No Man – Dina Carroll. My cousin, Chris, and I had a joint 18th birthday party at a local rugby club. It was so much fun, we were both horrendously drunk, and this is the first song the DJ played to get everyone up and dancing.

Was your first dance/you would like to be your first dance at your wedding?

What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong. It was supposed to be L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole, but we changed our mind a few days before when we realised we couldn’t dance to it…(Luke and I both have 2 left feet)

Reminds you of someone no longer here?

Somewhere Over the Rainbow – Judy Garland. This always makes me think of my lovely Nan, as she used to play this a lot to me when I was little.

Reminds you of a special holiday?

Bamboleo – Gypsy Kings. This takes me straight to the balcony on Tenerife where Luke proposed to me in 2014. The whole week was so chilled, drinking in the sun, listening to Spanish music.

Reminds you of someone you love?

Can’t Help Falling in Love – Elvis. This is the song I walked down the aisle to when we got married in 2015. Our oldest and closest friends sang/played this, making it so special and unique to us.

You will always sing to your children?

You Are My Sunshine. This has such a simple, child-like melody, but the most beautiful words.

You listened to first thing this morning?

Friend Like Me – from AladdinFrom the new musical soundtrack, this is what J and I were dancing to at 6.30 on our Sunday morning…

Is your all-time favourite?

Far too many to list…

I’m going to choose…..The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Roberta Flack

Or Stand By Me – Ben E. King

Or perhaps You Are The Sunshine Of My Life – Stevie Wonder
