Watching live music is a magical experience for young children. It is mesmerising to see musicians playing, singers singing, and dancers dancing. Live performance is inspiring and exciting, teaching children about different ways to move and learn. Furthermore, it can be used to encourage all forms of interaction, and spark your child’s imagination in ways you didn’t know were possible. Many orchestras, theatres, and town halls have music events for children. These are more relaxed performances, which allow children the chance to join in. Here are some of the most interesting music events for children in July 2017 – book your tickets now!
Nationwide Music Events
Until 29th October, Touring nationwide
Suitable for: Children aged 0 – 10 years
This is a great day out for lovers of dinosaurs! With over 30 animatronic models, they roar, move, and look very impressive. We visited Birmingham Botanical Gardens to see the dinosaurs, and loved exploring their lovely grounds. Read more here.
Mess Around Ltd. – Happimess Party
Throughout August, Nationwide
Suitable for: Children aged 6 months – 5 years
These Mess Around parties are absolutely brilliant! We attended a Mess Around rave a few weeks ago, and it one of the most original and fun things we have done with J. In June we enjoyed the Mess Around Despicable Me party, which was about all things yellow! This month, they are exploring colour, magic and happiness. There will be pizza making, cupcake decorating, glitter sparkly spaghetti, and a diamond disco! There is lots of mess involved – but none of the tidying up. Book onto one of these events – you won’t regret it.

There are 2 shows to choose from, and you will love watching your children’s faces as they meet their heroes. Filled with puppets, music and projections, this looks really special! Read more about what happened when we went to watch (Warning: Contains some spoilers!)
Room on the Broom
4th February – 27th August, Touring nationwide
Suitable for: Children aged 3+ years
This is one of our favourite Julia Donaldson stories! It tells the tale of a witch who has a few too many hitchhikers on her broom, causing it to snap in half. All of her extra passengers prove very useful though, when they run into a dragon! It’s very funny and very silly, and this production looks to be great fun. It is filled with lots of songs and puppetry.
London Music Events
3rd – 27th August, Polka Theatre, Wimbledon
Suitable for: Children aged 2-5 years
This is a lovely blend of Brazilian music and theatre, which follows the journey of an egg as it travels to its final resting place to hatch. It is filled with different sensory worlds, with a blend of sights and sounds. It is only 40 minutes long, so perfect for short attention spans.
The Fantastic World of Dr. Seuss
1st February – 3rd September, Discover Children’s Story Centre, Stratford
Suitable for: Children aged 0-7 years
The Discover Children’s Story Centre is a lovely place to visit with young children! It is a magical story land, full of great things to explore and climb around. There is currently a very cool and unique immersive Dr. Seuss exhibition there. It explores the weird characters and wacky places in the books of Dr. Seuss. There are lots of things to walk through, dress up in, play music with, and generally explore. It is great for curious kids who enjoy lots of stimulation.
10th June – 19th August, Unicorn Theatre, Southwark
Suitable for: Babies aged 6 – 18 months
This is amazing! It is a sensory show, all about a baby, a washing line, and the weather. It has been written specifically for very young children to enjoy, with a very relaxed setting and lots of laughter. You are free to move about, make noise, and feed your little one, with no worries about disturbing the performance. A lovely show for first-time theatre goers. And they are even offering hot drink with any food purchase at their morning performances! Can’t go wrong with that. Click here to read more.
Midlands Music Events
BAM: Babies’ Academy of Music presents… Summer Sounds
10th August, MAC, Birmingham
Suitable for: Children aged 0-4 years
This is set to be a wonderful outdoor concert for tiny tots! Hosted by Sam Fox and Ricardo Rocha, this gig will feature lots of lovely music from their home countries – Wales and Portugal. There will be a harp, accordion, guitar, ukulele, and lots of singing and joining in. Outdoor concerts are great for kids in the summer, as they are very chilled and relaxed. Give this one a try – I can’t wait to take J.
Musical Picnic – Midweek Explorer
16th August, Symphony Hall, Birmingham
Suitable for: Children under 5 years
These Musical Picnic concerts are fab! They are completely free, and you can just turn up without needing to book. They take place in the Symphony Hall foyer, so you can come and go if you need to, and you are free to move around. The Midweek Explorer programme is perfect for little ones. They explore music, dance, and story-telling, and early years practitioners engage with the little ones in very magical ways. They are a great introduction if you want to try a music concert, without the risk of losing any money if your child is not yet interested.
